You need a book.  ONE SPECIFIC BOOK for your paper.  It’s not at PC or in HELIN and you have a couple of weeks before the paper’s due.  You don’t want to buy it on Amazon, so WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Try in INTERLIBRARY LOAN.  Articles come within a couple of days and books usually with a week.  Here’s how:

upset 2

Go to the library homepage

Scroll down to GET IT

Click on “Interlibrary Loan Books” or “Interlibrary Loan Articles”

This takes you to the ILL form to fill out

Put in as much info as you can

Put in your name and barcode # from your PC ID

Click on “Submit”

THAT’S IT, CONGRATULATIONS!!!  You will receive an email when your book arrives or you will get the article as a pdf in your email.

Wow, that was easy.  If you have a question or problem, call me:

WHAT IS AN ILL?

Posted by: on December 16, 2013   |Comments (0)|Tips and Tools

An ILL is an Interlibrary Loan OUTSIDE the Helin catalog system, or Brown University.  What happens if you can’t find a book or an article that you need?

Don’t cry!  Just request an ILL!

Who can request an Interlibrary Loan?  All current PC students, faculty and staff.

How much does it cost?

20 dollar bill

Don’t worry, we always look for free lenders, and if we can’t find any we’ll let you know.

How long does it take?

flying books

Articles arrive via email usually within a couple of business days.  Sometimes this takes longer…  once we send out a request, we have no control over how long it takes.  Don’t count on it being in the next day!  Books come by “Library Mail”, even more slowly than regular snail mail, so probably a week or more…  so PLAN AHEAD!

How do I make a request?

There are a couple of ways…

ILL forms

One way is from the Library’s Homepage, under “Get It!”, you will see the links for either books or articles.  Or…

form access 2

if you are searching in a database or journal finder, you will see the links on the lefthand side, in yellow.

When you get to it, it looks like this:

book form

Just fill out as much information as you can, and hit the “Send Request” button.

How do I know if it went through?

Check your library account, and there should be and ILL “awaiting arrival”.  You will get an email notification for a book, or the article attached.

How long is the loan for?

calendar

Usually about a month with a one month renewal possible.  Articles are yours to download and keep.

So, happy ILLing.  If you have any questions, email us at ill@providence.edu or call 865-1994.
