What does doing yoga in front of the koi pond have to do with our office?  Plenty!  Beginning in 2011, the Office of Academic Services offered a peer mentoring program called Protégé.  Since then, we have paired incoming freshmen with upperclassmen to help support them transition college life.  Through monthly social events, such as a scavenger hunt where you are challenged to do yoga by the koi pond, or weekly meetings with a mentor, freshmen of Protégé establish connections to various members of the community and receive support during the first semester.  The focus of Protégé is primarily to support the academic demands encountered during first semester freshmen year, particularly developing good time management and study skills.  We are currently accepting applications from freshmen but space is limited so let us know ASAP if you are interested!   Click here for more information: Protégé

What Do You Do All Summer?

Posted by: on August 5, 2014   |Comment (1)|Staff

Back in May many students stopped by to say goodbye to us for the summer. And with those goodbyes usually comes the same questions….

  • You guys are on vacation, right?
  • Do you just close up for the summer?
  • What do you do with no students around? You must be so bored.

Oh, um, no. We’ve actually got a lot going on. So I decided to do a little sneaking up on people just to show you what we are doing this summer.
During Advising Day for Orientation, Jenn was encouraging everyone to spin the wheel for a prize!

She was also available to any incoming freshmen and transfer students with questions about our Disability Support Services.
Things are definitely more relaxed here during the summer, here we see Will catching up on his reading.

Will, PC Smarty Pants

He’s teaching WRT 100 this summer AND working on the Common Reading Essay Contest. Check out that Outliers Book he’s reading – this year’s Common Reading Book!
Anthony has been busy watching all of the World Cup games.

He’s also working on Certifications for our Student-Athletes. This is a review of their transcripts that shows they meet current class NCAA eligibility standards.
Kaitlyn has been on a rollercoaster.

She recently took on the position of Friar Foundations Coordinator. This exciting new program is a summer bridge program that aims at easing the transition from high school to college for approximately 20 students each year. Follow @FriarFound and check out #friarfoundations

Whether you’re at Dunkin Donuts  or just sitting in your office reading 1984, just remember, Big Brother is always watching.

Jonathan, PC Smarty Pants

Jonathan has been preparing for class. He’s teaching INT 100: Foundations for College Success – an intensive college skills preparatory course. Students will be reading 1984 in his class during Summer 2.
Marissa is off…

The Men’s Basketball team is here for the summer, so she’s working closely with them.

Sr. Carolyn actually does have her summers off.

But, that doesn’t stop her from checking in on us and getting ready for the new tutors to arrive.
Meghan has been enjoying some beach time.

But, she’s also been teaching INT 100: Foundations for College Success and the academic skills workshops for the Friar Foundation students. She is also creating three academic skill videos and planning the events for the upcoming year with the Protégé mentors
Bryan has been hiding from us all…

Bryan, PC Smarty Pants

But that’s just because he is working on a lot of new ideas for PC.
And me? What do I all summer? I am busy posting on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Amy, PC Smarty Pants

for FriarBook and the OAS of course! Have you picked up Outliers yet? Be sure to follow @friarbook and check out #friarbook. Also follow @ProvCollege_OAS and check out #pcsmartypants
But don’t worry – we’re all getting in some vacation time.
