Livin’ the Dream

Lent, as I have always perceived it, has been a time to reflect upon the passion of Christ and elicit within one’s self the very nature of contingency. To further explain, during Lent one may be compelled to give up chocolate, a habitual treat which will allow that individual to recall the necessity of having God in their life every time they think about this absence. This is an important practice because one’s heart will be opened and purified through this experience in anticipation for the resurrection of The Lord on Easter morning. I am thoroughly enticed to begin this challenge again this Lenten season because in my experience I have found that by living any other life than a life for Christ has led me down a decadent road. This period calls me into a greater relationship with Him and the entire Body of Christ.

In my younger years (not that I have many yet) I have simply dared myself to give up chocolate or limit myself in other simple ways. These have been beneficial, but this year I have provoked myself in other ways. In addition to giving up all sweets, so I may be reminded in those desires of a longing for The Lord, I have decided to pray the Litany of Humility at least once a day. This is important to me because as time flies in college I am beginning to realize that every day I have is fleeting and to waste it would be a shame. To be grateful for all the gifts which The Father blesses me with everyday would make me into a more compassionate and understanding person. I thoroughly believe God calls all of us to love through appreciation in this way.

To conclude, I would like to reflect that this blessing of life, which is cultivated in Lent, should be cherished always. The Lord instills pure desires and dreams inside all of His creations in hopes that they may use them to glorify Him in one respect or another. I intend to live this dream to a greater extent this Lent by the help of fasting and prayer so I may glorify The Lord with my life.
